Beaches
- Marazion The wide sandy beach at Marazion is great for children and has a fantastic view of St Michael’s Mount. Watch the windsurfers and kitesurfers in Mount’s Bay from this beach.
- Sennen Cove is a superb beach for families and surfers alike. Also a good access point to the South West Coastal Path.
- Porthcurno, Porthchapel and Porthgwarra are good small family beaches.
- St Ives and Gwithian Sands have wide stretches of sandy beaches and are very popular with sufers and families alike.
Coastline
Take a drive round the coast road in West Penwith, from Marazion to St Ives, and discover the many places to visit, views to view and paths to walk. Many
coves are accessible only on foot.
- South West Coastal Path runs right round Cornwall and can be joined from many places in the area.
- Sennen Cove Good access to the South West Coastal Path. Take a walk along the path to Land’s End for an excellent view of the coast and the lighthouse on the rocks.
- Cape Cornwall has spectacular views and is the only cape in England, a place where two seas meet, the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel.
- Botallack Nestled above the coast, the remains of Botallack mine, The Crowns, are perched on the cliff, evidence of Cornwall’s mining past.
- Gurnards Head Remote and accessible only on foot, the views are typical of the coastline in the West Penwith area.
- Minack Theatre Cornwall’s theatre under the stars was carved out of the rock by Rowena Cade. Live performances can be booked during the summer months. See the Minack Theatre website for details.
Historic & Pre–Historic Sites
- Levant Evidence of Cornwall’s mining past include the beam engine, which is fired up on certain days during the year.
- Lanyon Quoit One of many quoits in the West Penwith area. Other quoits include Mulfra, Chun and Men-an-Tol.
- Chyauster and Carn Euny The remains of early settlements include the low walls left from the courtyard houses and a fogou at Carn Euny.
- Merry Maidens Reputedly dating from the Bronze Age, the circle was probably used in pagan ceremonies. Close by is the Pipers Stones, the largest standing stones in Penwith, the tallest being 16 feet.
- St Michael’s Walk across the causeway at low tide from Marazion and climb up the steep path to visit the castle.
- Pendennis and St Mawes Castles are a short drive away, and are fairly intact.
- Tintagel is an awe inspiring and romantic spot, a place of legends.
- Truro Cathedral is magnificent both inside and out.
Gardens
- Trengwainton A National Trust garden on the outskirts of Penzance with great views over Mount’s Bay. Tender and exotic trees and shrubs flourish in this sheltered and virtually frost-free garden. There are also unique walled gardens with sloping beds, and stream and pond gardens.
- Trewidden Gardens are on the road to Land’s End. The gardens are steeped in history as well as natural beauty, originally planted by T B Bolitho in the late 19th Century.
- Lost Gardens of Heligan In 1990, after 75 years of neglect, the gardens were re–discovered and thereafter restored on a shoestring budget by a small band of enthusiasts. The estate has been brought back to life to thrill a new generation.
- Eden Project A dramatic global garden the size of thirty football pitches nestling like a lost world in an old china clay pit overlooking St Austell Bay.
- Glendurgan, Trellissick, Lanhydrock and Cotehele Other National Trust gardens that are slightly further away but well worth a visit.
- Trebah is a beautiful 26 acre garden that is listed among the 80 finest in the world.
Isles of Scilly
Whether staying on the islands or taking a day trip, there are many attractions on the Isles of Scilly.
- St Mary’s There are many ancient monuments to be discovered on St Mary’s, from a megalithic village and tombs to Civil War fortifications. There is a small museum in Hugh Town and a Heritage Centre in the middle of the island.
- Abbey Gardens, Tresco A sub–tropical wonderland, the gardens are a riot of 20,000 exotic species. The gardens are home to many rare plants that cannot be grown anywhere else in Britain.
- Cromwell’s Castle, Tresco was built by Oliver Cromwell in 1651–1652, on a promontory to guard the anchorage between Bryher and Tresco.
- St Martin’s has a choice of some of the finest sandy beaches with safe bathing, secluded coves, and many interesting walks along the cliffs and downs.
- St Agnes is one of those rare places which can honestly claim to be unspoilt. The sea is crystal clear, ideal for snorkelling and diving, and there are sandy coves with rock pools, including ’Beady Pool’ where children and adults alike hunt for beads buried in the sand from a 17th century shipwreck
- Bryher The smallest of the inhabited islands, Bryher encapsulates both wild beauty and gentle tranquility. Ideal for walking, the Bryher coastal paths follow the varied shore and the hills command splendid views of all of Scilly.
Cornish Art
- St Ives Visit the artists community in St Ives and the Tate Gallery, and don't forget the fabulous beaches.
- Newlyn View and purchase local art from galleries in Newlyn. There are also good places to eat here with fresh locally caught fish on the menu.
- Penzance has all the amenties of a town including good places to eat and many shops. There are art galleries here too, and the art collection at Penlee museum is also worth a visit.
- Sennen Cove The Round House and Capstan Galleries exhibit and sell contempory Cornish art. All of the work is hand–crafted in Cornwall by artists, sculptors, ceramisists and jewellers.
- St Just Galleries in St Just showcase local art including paintings of local sights.
